Text

"Mondi Distorti is American artist Evan Roth’s first solo show in Italy. Distortions in the representation of reality and in the world of digital networks are the focus of his artistic research, which moves between photography, video, installation and painting.

Like other artists of his generation who grew up in the 1990s, Roth began using the web as a free digital art sharing platform. In the early 2000s, Roth’s understanding (as well as other artists, think of Eva and Franco Mattes or Paolo Cirio to name some who have exhibited at FMAV in recent years) of what the Internet was changed. It was no longer that intangible utopian space where content was exchanged for free. It had become centralized, monetized, and also used for control and surveillance.
This new awareness led Roth to question what the web actually was, how it worked, what it physically looked like, and how it was managed.

The exhibition displays works from 2013 to 2023 produced from the artist’s reflections on the relationship between the Internet and society. They range from a mapping of transoceanic Internet cables (Landscapes) to musings on our distorted perception of the world (Bent Networks, Skyscapes, Strands, “•••”), as also fostered by political powers throughout history.
